Jieyu was born and raised in Sichuan, China. She obtained her bachelor degree in chemistry from Sun Yat-sen University in 2019, under the supervision of Professor Ming-Liang Tong. During her time in the Tong group, Jieyu worked in the field of molecular magnetism, including lanthanide-based single-molecule magnets and Fe(III) spin crossover complexes. She also visited the University of Manchester under the invitation of Prof. Richard Winpenny in 2018, where she worked on the property of Yb complexes with EPR.

Jieyu joined the Nitschke group as a PhD student with Cambridge International & Newnham College Scholarship in October 2019.
